How to Request Donor Breast Milk
Gwinnett Breastfeeding works with the Metro Atlanta Mother's Milk Alliance (MAMMA), a community milk-sharing program that connects screened donors with local families seeking donor breast milk.
Register With MAMMA
Begin by registering as a milk recipient with the Metro Atlanta Mother's Milk Alliance.
Follow the Recipient Process
MAMMA provides current recipient information, including program requirements, milk availability, and next steps.
Receive Available Donor Milk
MAMMA helps connect community families whose babies are not hospitalized with screened donor milk when milk is available.
Registration and current recipient information are handled through the Metro Atlanta Mother's Milk Alliance.
Availability is not guaranteed. Register with MAMMA for current recipient information, eligibility requirements, availability, and instructions.
What Should I Know About MAMMA?
Metro Atlanta Mother's Milk Alliance is a community milk alliance, not a traditional milk bank.
Donors undergo screening and serological testing similar to protocols used by milk banks. Donated milk is traced using an anonymized donor number.
Unlike milk distributed through a traditional milk bank, donor milk received through MAMMA is not pasteurized onsite. Recipient families are responsible for pasteurizing the milk they receive at home according to MAMMA's instructions.
If you have milk you would like to share instead, visit our Donate Breast Milk page to learn about donor screening and the donation process.
Donor Milk Can Help Today.
Lactation Support Can Help You Move Forward.
Getting the milk your baby needs and getting help with your own milk supply are not mutually exclusive.
If providing your own milk is important to you, an IBCLC can help assess the bigger feeding picture. That may include milk production, milk removal, your baby's milk transfer, latch, pumping, feeding patterns, or other individual factors.
Our breastfeeding support can help assess breastfeeding and milk transfer, while our pumping support can help with pump fit, flange sizing, settings, technique, pumping schedules, and milk-production concerns.
Sometimes supplementation is temporary. Sometimes it remains an important part of a family's feeding plan. The goal is to understand what is happening and help you make informed decisions based on your baby, your body, and your feeding goals.
There May Be More to Explore
If you're concerned about how much milk you're making, a lactation consultation can help look at the whole feeding picture.
Milk Production
Explore your milk production, feeding history, and individual circumstances rather than relying on assumptions about supply.
Milk Transfer
Look at latch, feeding effectiveness, and how your baby is transferring milk during breastfeeding.
Pumping
Review pump fit, flange sizing, settings, frequency, technique, and your pumping routine.
Feeding Your Baby
Consider breastfeeding, pumping, bottles, supplementation, and your baby's individual feeding needs together.
